A parent's guide to talking about money
Children learn about money long before anyone sits them down to teach it. A few relaxed conversations make a big difference, and games make them easier to start.
Play a round together
Take a turn each on Hoglet Gold Dash or Gold Trader and compare risk scores, not just profits. Ask: "Who was more careful? Who got lucky?"
Questions that get them talking
- "Would you rather have £10 now or £15 in a month? Why?"
- "What did you feel when the price dropped? What did you do?"
- "Is it better to win big once, or win small lots of times?"
- "What's something you saved up for? How did it feel?"
Ideas that stick
- Needs and wants: sorting a shopping list together is a quick lesson.
- Saving pots: a jar or an app with "spend", "save" and "give" pots makes choices visible.
- Compounding: show them how small regular savings grow. Our compounding guide helps.
- Greed loses: share a time you, or someone you know, chased a "sure thing". Honest stories beat lectures.
It's never too late
Plenty of adults never got this at school. Learning alongside your child is one of the best ways to show that money skills matter.
Learn it by playing, with pretend money.
